Prepare the cut-off
Choose a count time and control sales, receipts and transfers around it. Define locations, clean up item duplicates and assign count teams. Record the exact time of the system balance used for comparison.
Your working checklist
- Count by location using consistent units.
- Recount material differences with a second person.
- Investigate unposted receipts, sales and transfers.
- Approve adjustments only after the explanation is recorded.
Put it into practice
For example, six cartons of twelve units should not be entered as six individual items. Keep the signed count, recount evidence and adjustment reference. Use repeated variances to identify training or control problems rather than simply resetting the number.
